Lightweight Magnesium Oxychloride-Based Building Units from Egyptian Raw Magnesite
Interceram 64 (2015) [6] 266-270
Raw Materials Worldwide

Abstract:
Water resistant magnesium oxychloride (MOC)-based building products were prepared from different two samples of raw magnesite and rice straw waste up to 10 mass-%. Active magnesium oxide as starting material for the preparation of MOC was prepared from raw magnesite by calcination at temperatures of 650 and 1000 °C. MOC-based lightweight building units can be prepared with a bulk density range between 1.0–1.4 g/cm3 with a compressive strength of up to 27 MPa and a modulus of rupture of up to 11 MPa. Selected samples were investigated using XRD and TEM. The XRD characterization results revealed the formation of phase 5, phase 3 and chlorartinite. The TEM informed that these phases are at nano scale.
